Australian rockers Pond returned earlier in the month with their new album The Weather, which they released via Marathon Artists. The album takes their sound to an even bigger and more ambitious direction. On May 10 they brought their U.S. tour in support of the album to Bowery Ballroom, following a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg the night before.
The connection to Tame Impala will always be there with former bassist Nick Allbrook leading the charge, along with Jay Watson, who plays full-time for both. Then there’s always Kevin Parker, who used to play drums for them, and although he’s a bit too busy with Tame Impala to do both, he still helped produce The Weather at his home studio.
Allbrook and the rest of Pond confidently and assuredly ripped through the new songs, which felt right at home alongside older favorites like “Elvis’ Flaming Star” and “Giant Tortoise.” Allbrook led the charge with his energetic moves and even came into the crowd a few times, giving the crowd an extra boost along the way. Not that they needed it, from the very first notes of the set opener “30.000 Megatons” the packed Bowery Ballroom was moving and grooving along with Pond, with them all the way until the very end.
The group has found themselves quite a devoted following that will only get bigger over time. Be sure to catch them while they’re still playing rooms like Bowery, as I’m sure they’ll be moving up the ranks in no time (they were at Rough Trade the last time we saw them).
