On Sunday night, My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James brought his solo tour to New York City for a big time performance at Temrinal 5. He’s played some big time venues throughout the city (and globe) with MMJ, but this was one of his biggest solo performances in the city in quite some time. The tour came in support of his new album Eternally Even, which was released via ATO Records/Capitol Records.
James has this shy, down to earth presence to his personality, but even so, on stage he is able to summon all kinds of feelings and sounds and create a communal like effect with his audience. He shared a good majority of his offerings from Eternally Even, which had much more punch and sonic oomph live than they do on record, brought to life by his backing band which included the members of Twin Limb, who also opened the show. Along with those songs, he gave us memorable material from his debut solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God, as well as a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’m Set Free,” Monster Of Folk’s “Dear God (Sincerly M.O.F.) and the riveting New Basement Tapes track “Down On The Bottom.”
The regular set was a clinic of rock and roll, but it was the 4-song encore that elevated things and had the entire floor of Terminal 5 moving in sync with James’, singing along to every word as if it was gospel. It was a Sunday night spent in the church of Jim James, and what a ceremony it was.
