Scottish indie rockers The Twilight Sad put on as intense and moody of a show as you’ll find anywhere. There aren’t any tricks, no fancy light show or backdrop (aside from a banner sporting the artwork of their terrific 2014 album Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave).
But what you do get is a band ready to lay it all on the table, giving you their blood, sweat, and tears, in an emotional display of craftsmanship led by the theatrical frontman that is James Graham.
The Twilight Sad were about as tight as you can ever imagine them being, taking a break from opening up for The Cure (yes, The Cure) during their massive arena tour. They seemed at ease to finally get to play in a room more their size, packed with adoring fans who were willing to sing along with every word passionately.
I can point to a few memorable moments (“Last January,” “There’s A Girl In The Corner,”It Never Was the Same,” ” I Could Give You All That You Don’t Want,” but the encore performance of “And She Would Darken The Memory” was just a force of nature that proved that The Twilight Sad are truly one of the most underrated bands in the world right now. Plain an simple.
Next year will be three years since their last album, and after months on the road with The Cure, I have high hopes for whatever they have in store for us next.
