With every release and new tour date stop in New York City, it seems that Mitski just somehow keeps growing her fanbase tenfold. It’s no surprise, as her latest album, Puberty 2, which was released via Dead Oceans and remains one of my favorite albums of 2016 and it seems like many others agree as she not only sold out Bowery Ballroom in the span of a couple hours, but she also sold out Music Hall of Williamsburg and will return later in the year for a sold out Webster Hall.
This was a special night not only because it was a sold out Mitski show, but it also just happened to be the night of a rare strawberry moon. In between songs Mitski reminded us to check out the moon before we left, and she also gave us some insight about where her pink bass went (she joked that she got rid of it because “every fucking live show review was about her pink bass,”).
The very young crowd that filled up Bowery Ballroom tightly sang along to every single word that Mitski sang, making her songs seem larger than life, more so than they already were. Hearing her songs live make you realize just how dramatic and poetic they are. Hell, she even made her cover of Calvin Harris’ “How Deep Is Your Love” sound beautiful (she joked that it was the only song not written by her, but rather by “a very rich man.”)
The show was opened by Philadelphia’s Japanese Breakfast, the new band of Michelle Zauner of Little Big League, who released their great debut album Psychopomp this spring via Yellow K Records.
