On an early summer evening back in June, Kevin Morby made his return to the New York City at the Mercury Lounge while out on tour in support of his fantastic new album Singing Saw which came out in April (via Dead Oceans). Singing Saw is on my running list of top/best albums of the year, so I was very excited to see his show as I was dying to hear the new material.
It was a treat to get to see him play Mercury as, well… he should easily be playing somewhere twice the size. I saw him a few times back in 2015 and every time I saw him it was better than the last, and this kept that pattern alive with being one of the best shows I’ve seen him put on yet.
Standouts from the set were the title track off the new album “Singing Saw,” the set–stealing “Harlem River,” and the beautiful solo version of “Black Flowers.”
