On February 11, Ty Segall scared the shit out of national audiences when he, and his current band The Muggers, caused chaos and destruction on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. As if that wasn’t enough, they kept the good vibes going later on that night when later that day they were revealed to be a secret guest at the tiny Baby’s All Right for an insane late show at the ungodly hour of 2 am.
The brief but highly memorable set lasted under an hour but man did Ty and The Muggers make every second count. Dressed in facepaint Ty and his band (which includes Mikal Cronin, King Tuff, Cory Hanson & Evan Burrows of Wand, and Emmett Kelly of The Cairo Gang) were quite literally buzzed from their crazy day and delivered a batshit crazy performance that wasn’t for the faint of heart. Segall would connect with members in only ways he could, by spitting on his hand and high-fiving fans, sharing alcohol by spitting it into fans mouths, or mooning lucky members of the front row after ripping the back of his pants exposing a good chunk of his behind. Tracks from his new album Emotional Mugger (released via Drag City Records) mixed with select old cuts, blending into the messy night, which included a fuzzed up cover of The Beatles’ “I Want You / She’s No Heavy.”
There was a lush unabashed feeling to the set, as you would sort of expect at a 2am show. The band and audience didn’t late the late start time affect them in any way, as this was about as wild and crazy of a show as you’d find, delivered in ways that you can only get from a Ty show.
