On December 3 legendary rockers Dinosaur Jr. packed out Bowery Ballroom for the first of an insane seven night run of sold out shows in celebration of the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Dinosaur. The show featured them playing the album from front to back, and then a set of favorites from throughout their impressive career.
The performance featured many surprises, and it started early with Henry Rollins introducing the band comfortably from the VIP section of the 2nd balcony. After hearing the album the group dove into some deep cuts and classics, bringing out a few guests, all of which were here in town the previous night for the Ground Control Touring celebration at Webster Hall. Kurt Vile came out for “Crumble” as well as a cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer,” Steve Gunn helped out on “Yeah We Know, Eleanor Friedberger helped sing on “Get Me,” and Kim Gordon gave an epic performance joining them for “Don’t,” which saw her getting up close and personal with the crowd. It was great.
It was truly a celebration of everything Dinosaur Jr. It was hard to believe that there would be six more shows of this, but after 30 years of being a band, that was nothing.
