A few weeks ago we finally got new music from The Last Shadow Puppets in the form of single “Bad Habits,” but we were still awaiting official word about a new full-length album, rather impatient after a long eight year wait.
Well tonight our prayers have been answered, as the duo of Alex Turner and Miles Kane have announced that their new album is called Everything You’ve Come To Expect, and will be released on April 1 (not a joke!) via Domino Records. 2016 is shaping up to be some year.
Everything You’ve Come To Expect was recorded last summer at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studios in Malibu, California, a studio with plenty of history, with previous owners included Bob Dylan and The Band. In addition to the duel threat of Alex Turner and Miles Kane, the album once again featured James Ford (Arctic Monkeys producer and member of Simian Mobile Disco) on drums, Owen Pallet (a frequent contributor of Arcade Fire) handling the string section, as well as the new addition of Zach Dawes (of Mini Mansions) on bass.
According to NME, Turner said that the long wait between albums was because they intended to release a trilogy and “wanted to write the second and third parts before we released the second.” In terms of the sound of the album, Turner suggested a change (not a surprise with the change of direction found on “Bad Habits). He noted how the last album ended up being “just one thing,” along with their fandom of Scott Walker causing the album to have been perceived to be a homage to that sound. He hints a change with the new album, saying “this one, in my head, doesn’t wear its influences on its sleeve as much as the first one did. We were definitely listening to a bit of Isaac Hayes this time, but it was less of a big deal.”
The album is now available to pre-order, with special edition vinyl and CD packages available on a limited first run pressing. The packages include goodies like photo booklets and special 7″ vinyls (one of which is a 7″ of “Bad Habits”, with an exclusive b-side, “The Bourne Identity”), so don’t sleep on this. Once they’re gone they’re gone for good.
