On July 21 Glasgow synth-pop trio Chvrches made their live return to New York City for a last minute intimate performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg. The show was announced along with their new album Every Open Eye, which will finally be released this Friday, September 25, via Glassnote Records.
The night featured an opening set from fellow Glassnote artist Baio, better known as Vampire Weekend’s very own Chris Baio. He shared cuts from his just released debut album The Names. We caught him just last week at Rough Trade NYC, where he celebrated the albums release. We’ll have a post from that show coming shortly as well.
The trio of Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty, made their return with a new offering “Clearest Blue,” seemingly picking up right where they left off. They didn’t plan to overwhelm us with all new material at once, breaking it up by following it with familiars off of their breakthrough 2013 debut record The Bones of What You Believe, “Gun,” “Lies” and “Lungs.” The group didn’t miss a beat, filling out Music Hall far too well, with the exiting energy returned from the enthusiastic crowd. This was a rare moment to be able to look the band in the eye in a venue that they played, something certainly not lost on anyone in attendance.
But from there the band almost exclusively stuck to songs from their debut album for the rest of their set, aside from “Dead Air” their contribution to the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack last year. They offered one more new song called “Make Them Gold” before finishing as they should with “The Mother We Share,” leaving us in wild anticipation for the new album, as well as their upcoming sold out performance at Central Park Summerstage next Tuesday, September 29.
