20-year-old Londoner Flo Morrissey may not be a name you’re familiar with at the moment, but that will change in due time. She’s a new signee to Glassnote Records, who will release her debut album Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful on July 17.
Last Tuesday night I caught a more than intimate performance from Morrissey, who played at Caffe Vivaldi to a small crowd who huddled around the select tables and chairs packed in the tiny cafe. There was something romantic about hearing her perform in a cafe amongst the sounds of espresso being made and passing cars on the street outside. She performed a stunning 30-minute performance of highlights from Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful such as lead single “Pages Of Gold.” She also included a cover of Tuxedomoon’s “In A Manner Of Speaking,” which you could have mistaken for one of her own songs if you didn’t know any better.
Morrissey is still a relatively new live performer, and showed some understandable nerves here and there. During the second song “Show Me,” she told us she almost forgot the words to the song, which threw her off as she wrote it when she was 15. The last two songs of her set (“Why” + “If You Can’t Love This All Goes Away”) were piano based, and showed a passionate delicacy that swept me off my feet. She’s a surefire talent, instantly winning me, and the rest of the audience, over with her captivating vocals and natural songwriting ability.
Acquaint yourself with Morrissey and catch her in a tiny place while the opportunity presents itself. She’ll be captivating large audiences in no time.
