Last year a group named Deers caught the attention of many music fans and bloggers (including us) with a set of wonderful singles. But earlier this year they were forced to change their name because Montreal rock band Dears thought the name was too similar and threatened them with legal action. Deers soon became Hinds, and now the rest is history. Last month played a ton of shows at SXSW and garnered a great deal of buzz along the way. Now it seems like the old name is all but forgotten, allowing the era of Hinds to become in full effect.
Hinds made the return trip to New York to play their second and third shows ever in New York, at Mercury Lounge and Baby’s All Right. I was able to catch the bands show at Baby’s, which went down on April 1.
Allentown Pennsylvania band The Yetis opened things up with a set of throwback rock and roll with a bit of a surfy influence. They seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage, and that breezy attitude rubs off on its music which is highly enjoyable and easy to get hooked on. They had quite a few fans in attendance that came for them, which is an encouraging sign for such a young band.
They’ll release their new 3-track EP Lonely Tandem Ride at the end of May. You can hear some songs on their soundcloud page as well. Keep an eye on these guys.
Hinds are still relatively newcomers, but they had a sizable audience at Baby’s and had the tunes to back it up. The all-female group have a lot of fun on stage, and it’s felt on their jubilant and jangly set of indie-rock. They have an upbeat and contagious spirit in their shared vocals that are an interesting combo on top of the garage-rock ideas that they hammer on stage. They keep things loose and fun, sporting plenty of smiles and shared laughs throughout the ramshackle set. Their bubbly energy on stage is a contagious thing, its spirit spread throughout Baby’s and captivated the entire audience to let loose along with them.
Hinds are at work on their debut album, which will hopefully be released this year. If they can get it out by the summer time, it’s sure to be one of the best albums for summer listening that you’ll find all year.
