Last month up-and-coming Brit-rockers Wolf Alice made their New York City live debut with a show at Baby’s All Right. They’ve already returned to the states for SXSW as well as a bunch of tours surrounding it. This brought them back to New York this weekend for a free show at Brooklyn Night Bazaar along with Sunflower Bean (who we also saw at Baby’s last month), Palehound and Lazyeyes.
I got there in time for Wolf Alice’s set, and they sounded even better than they did at Baby’s, somehow sounding a little bit tighter and grittier. The setlist was already different from last month’s, with one song added. That’s an encouraging sign for a young band, comfortable in changing things up and keeping things fresh.
Their 10-song set featured old favorites like “Fluffy” as well as cuts from their upcoming debut album My Love Is Cool (out June 23) such as the recently shared single “Giant Peach.” The performance was a steady stream of big grungy guitars riffs leaning on 90s influences, and big pop-minded choruses gracefully led by lead-singer Ellie Rowsell. Live you can really get a feel for the variety of styles that they incorporate into their sound, one that constantly had the crowd rocking out along with them.
They haven’t released an album yet, but they already seem to have a strong dedicated fanbase who know the words to most – if not all – of the songs. That’s an encouraging a sign as a young band can ask for. I’m excited to hear how these songs turned out on the album, cause if they’re as good as they are live, it’s going to be one of the best debuts that 2015 has to offer.
