Drenge, the british duo of Eoin and Rory Loveless summon quite a bit of noise together. They broke through with their debut album in 2013, and look to return in a big way this year with their newly announced record Underdow (due out April 6 via Infectious Records).
Earlier in the week they performed on Letterman, and followed that up on Thursday with a show at Brooklyn’s Shea Stadium. The violent red lighting of Shea Stadium was fitting for the groups sound, no-nonsense, heavy sludge garage-rock, that sits somewhere in-between (early) The Black Keys and recent British breakout stars, Royal Blood.
Eoin mans the vocals, but it’s his frantic guitar riffs that speak the loudest, creating a impenetrable force with the heavy-hitting percussion of Rory. The brothers are now joined by bassist Rob Graham live, who helps round out their sound nicely. They mixed cuts from their debut, along with new Undertow tracks such as “We Can Do What We Want” (the Letterman cut), full on heavy hitters that remind us that rock and roll hasn’t gone anywhere.
Drenge have seen a great deal of success in their native land, but it’s time for these guys to captivate bigger audiences over here. They certainly have the sound to do so.
