There was no way that Fat White Family would be able to top their late night performance at Baby’s All Right during the final night of CMJ this year. It was a beautiful mess that ending up being my favorite performance of the entire week. I saw nearly 40 sets that week, so that’s saying something.
The band seem to have found a fondness not only for playing New York, but for playing at Baby’s All Right, as they returned to play shows on consecutive Saturday nights earlier this month. I ended up going to the first one, and it was a grand old time.
The show never quite reached the same levels of shit show as the last time, but it was still pretty crazy. Lias Saudi was animated as usually, taking time to sing within the crowd as well as briefly crowdsurf. They changed their set around which is always refreshing to see from new bands, but the highlight again was the always strange seductive “Touch The Leather.” Earlier in the set an older man brushed past me and climbed onto the stage and seemed to disappear. Out he came during “Touch The Leather,” coming center stage and stripping out of his leather jacket and grooving to the songs sexy beat. Oddly enough, the band didn’t interact with him or acknowledge him. He was just kind of there for the track, and left right after.
Only at a Fat White Family show.
