On November 24 I was able to catch a great early show at Mercury Lounge featuring a strong triple bill comprised of The Wytches, Lodro and The Teen Age.
Up first was Brooklyn’s very own The Teen Age, who I have been trying to see live again for some time, with the last show coming at Glasslands in 2013 when they opened for Palma Violets. The group gave a energetic rocking performance full of smart guitar riffs that left a more than memorable impression. Keep an eye on these guys for sure.
Lodro, another band out of Brooklyn were up next, and pretty early on in their set I understood why they were opening for Wytches. While they had a more calming presence, their self-described brand of “neo noir punk” was well appreciate by all.
If you haven’t yet heard British trio The Wytches’ debut album Annabel Dream Reader yet, you really should go and check it out. It’s a heavy-hitting record in all the right ways, finding a good balance of heavy-garageness to go along with some psych and even surfy influences. They played in mostly darkness, with an ugly, heavy, red light as they only glimmer into their souls. Singer Kristian Bell’s hair kept his face hidden while he sang his pummulting vocals, while bassist Dan Rumsey and drummer Gianni Honey were always intune, quietly rocking out in their own ways.
The Wytches are a young band but they’re already quite established in more ways than one. Will be interesting to see what the future holds for them.
