In 2013, San Francisco-based heavy rockers Deafheaven released Sunbather, an album that got praised pretty much across the board. They also have garnered the same amount of praise for their live show, which I got to take in first hand this summer at the Basilica Soundscape Festival in Hudson, NY.
They returned to New York again on November 19 to play a free show at Music Hall of Williamsburg as a part of the Converse Rubber Tracks series. While the music that Deafheaven isn’t normally my “cup of tea,” there’s just something about the way they play their blend of metal that just connects.
The set included most recent single “From the Kettle Onto the Coil” as well as Sunbather cuts such as “Dream House” and “The Peacan Tree.” Frontman George Clark was theatrical as all hell, summoning the crowd towards the stage at all moments, not afraid of showing emotion, whether it be a fierce gaze or a sexual flick of the tongue.
Clark hinted that the group would be retreated for a bit to record their new album. Now that the band is become more well known, it will be interesting to see what they bring to the table on the eventual follow-up.
