Did you have plans to see The Interview during your Christmas break? Well you’ll have to pick another flick, because the film will no longer be shown in theaters.
We knew that The Interview would cause a bit of controversy, but never to the point where the movie may not see the light of day (at least in movie theaters). With the mysterious hackers dishing out threats to any of the theaters that screen the Sony Picture comedy starring Seth Rogan and James Franco, all of the major theater chains have opted out. AMC Entertainment, Regal Entertainment, Cinemark, Carmike Cinemas and Cineplex Entertainment have all decided against showing the film.
Hackers have been attacking Sony Pictures for weeks now, but Sony had still planned to show the film come Christmas Day (even if they did cancel Rogan and Franco’s press appearances). However, the ominous threat against theaters showing the comedy became too much of a risk for the theater companies, and now the state of the movie has been thrown completely in flux. There’s always the chance that it will be released directly into homes on VOD, but that too will likely come to scrutiny with these hackers.
It’s disappointing that we won’t be able to see the film because of the actions of these hackers, and it’s a bit shocking to see us give in to their threats. But of course, it’s totally understandable. I’m sure we will eventually get to see the movie. Ironically the insane amount of press that the movie is receiving due to this would have probably helped the movie’s box office results.
This is surely a developing story. We’ll have more on this very soon.
