Last month Weyes Blood (a.k.a. Natalie Mering) released her new album The Innocents via Mexican Summer. I caught a set from her at Glasslands on October 28 that came in support of the album’s release and what a lovely affair it was.
Opening the show was TONSTARTSSBANDHT, the epicly named band consisting of brothers Edwin and Andy White. It was just the two of them on stage along with the colorful projections that served as their backdrop. They pumped out experimental psych-led songs that were quite a trip to take in.
Next was Weyes Blood, who now has her own backing band, a drastic difference from the solo set I saw from her at Baby’s All Right opening for Woods back in April. The dreamy vision of Mering’s project was brought to full fruition with the band, along with fitting projections that just added to the sensory overload of the performance. Her sound is one that is a psych-breakdown of folk rock, giving it both a fresh and vintage turn at once. More people should really be talking about Weyes Blood at once.
