I’ve heard many different things, from many different sources about Fat White Family. The British group have quickly made a name for themselves as one of the most polarizing figures to come out of the scene in some time. All I knew about them was that they can get naked at their live shows, and that they had less than kind words to say about Alex Turner. So going into their performance at Baby’s All Right for Brooklynvegan’s free day party, I really had no idea quite what to expect.
Once they took the stage and started their dirty, grimy, ruckus of a sound, that all went away. The only thing I knew was that these guys are totally captivating live. I was hooked. Frontman/singer Lias Saoudi is like a possessed madman, spending as much time clothed as unclothed, and equal time in the crowd, as on stage. There was one point that he climbed onto the ceiling of Baby’s, ripping off a piece that ended up hitting a fan in the face, causing a gush of blood to streak down his face. Instead of acting concerned, the bloody fan just wiped the blood all over his face and shirt, continuing to party with the Fat White Family frontman who was still just an arms reach away.
Live, Fat Whites have much more oomph and energy that oddly got lost on their debut album Champagne Holocaust. But it’s such as hectic show that the music bleeds into all the chaos, except for the repeated refrain of single “Touch The Leather” which stood out as a clear highlight of the show.
I didn’t know it at the time, but the band would be back at Baby’s in less than 12 hours, to perform a red eye set. Coverage from that show is on the way. For now, enjoy photos of the day party posted below.
