Last Wednesday night Foxygen tour through Music Hall of Williamsburg in support of their new album …And Star Power, which was released this week via Jagjaguwar.
This version of Foxygen is a totally different one than the one that broke out in CMJ 2012. Nowadays they pack a whopping total of nine people on stage, including three female singers/dancers, as well as a few extra guitarists (With Jonathan Rado mostly behind keys now). These days singer Sam France sports long blonde hair, which seems to trail behind him as he frantically runs around the stage jumping all around seemingly never keeping still. He kept this pace from the opening bit of “How Can You Really” all the way through to to the finishing touch of “Teenage Alien Blues.”
What drew me to Foxygen during those CMJ performances was their crazy energy. Now with additional members the energy is intensified in such a way that is hard not to get lost in. In energizes the performance of older tracks such as “No Destruction” and “Shuggie” as well as Star Power Material “Brooklyn Police Station” and “Cannial Holocaust.”
France had no problem sitting on stage right in front of the crowd, or diving in literally head first, as long as the song called for it. He was like a madman, belting out the lyrics while delivering leg kicks only inches away from the young fans in the front row. This deranged, almost possessed state was shared throughout the group, including the group of singers, who also had a crazed look to them throughout the night. It’s a part of the charm of the epic …And Star Power and works over quite nicely live.
Foxygen have totally reinvented themselves live, and it’s a great deal of fun to watch them live. I’m excited to see what will come next for them in the future, because I feel like they’re the sort of band who will continue to evolve. That’s pretty rare, and exciting.
