The Raveonettes and Coves at Music Hall of Williamsburg (September 30, 2014)

On Tuesday night, The Raveonettes and Coves played their second consecutive show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, packing the walls with plenty of guitar goodness to go around.

UK duo Coves were up first, fresh of the release of their debut album Soft Friday. The group is comprised of singer Rebekah Wood and multi-instrumentalist John Rigard, who are joined by a stand-up drummer live. They delivered a promising punch of mesmerizing psych-guitar that hit hard when it needed, but also found moments of solitude and reflection that called to mind 80s Brit acts such as Echo and The Bunnymen.

This makes sense, as the group toured with the famed group last year. Songs like “Wake Up” have an immediate draw, using a devastating guitar line to draw you in and never let go. They were a perfect opener for The Raveonettes, and ones that we will be seeing a lot of in the immediate future.

The only other time I saw The Raveonettes live was during Siren Music Festival 2009, which seems like a lifetime ago now. So in a way, Tuesday nights performance was truly my first true The Raveonettes live experience, and it didn’t disappoint. The Danish duo of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo, along with their live drummer, delivered a devastatingly cool mix of showgaze and noisy guitar freakouts, that combine for heavenly results when you through in the duo’s sugary vocals. They played a good mix of tracks from their surprise 2014 album Pe’ahi as well as the rest of their now seven album catalog. I’m sure every Raveonettes fan can pick a highlight that’s unique to them, but for me, its always been “Dead Sound.” There’s just something about the song that gets me every time.
