Last night Father / Daughter Records put on a wonderful showcase at Shea Stadium featuring a very solid bill of Rivergazer, Sharpless, Small Wonder and Flagland.
Rivergazer is the project of Kevin Farrant of Porches. They blew me away with a impressive set of inspiring lively songs with folk-roots, but with plenty of grand moments that inspired. They released their debut album Random Nostalgi just last week and its a record that shouldn’t go under your radar. In the middle of their set Kolson Pickard let a fan get on stage and cut off his beard in what was just one of the many great moments from their set.
Sharpless are no strangers to this blog, but it took me until last to finally see the group live. Their latest album The One I Wanted To Be was released this summer, and truly is a must listen. I like the album quite a bit, but hearing the songs played live delivers a different sort of punch that had the crowd (with many of their friends in attendance) going understandably wild. It was a fun set full of all kinds of energy that couldn’t be contained.
There’s a raw fragility to Small Wonder, the project of Henry Crawford that captivated the attentive audience that watched on last night. Crawford delivers honest songs with a powerful emotional connection that will leave you transfixed and wanting more. Jack Greenleaf of Sharpless helped out on keys/vocals, giving all the songs of Henry’s a little bit of a boost that made all the difference.
Flagland are a Brooklyn trio who released their new album Love Hard on Father / Daughter earlier in the year. They delivered a flavorful punch of punk rock with a heavy draw from 90s acts, a perfect fit for the sweltering heat of Shea Stadium.
