Alvvays have released one of the best debut albums of 2014 with the release of their self-titled effort (out now via Polyvinyl). It’s a polished album of bright-minded surf rock guitar jams, and it’s been all that I’ve been listening to over the last two weeks.

Last night the Toronto band stopped by Rough Trade NYC for a free show. It was a highly enjoyable set, featuring all of the delightful material from their record. Loads of bouncy, jangly guitars, synths and solid melodies that all add up to delicious results. Vocalist Molly Rankin leads the way with sincere vocals that sound familiar, as if you’ve always been listening to her sing. The rest of the band brings a tight youthful charge that got the packed room at Rough Trade moving.

There’s a bright shimmering nature to their material, such as the irresistible “Archie, Marry Me” and the delightful “Next Of Kin.” With only so much material to work with, they played most of the album, as well as a song called “Yr Type.” They made the most of their limited catalog, making each song count, urging us to bounce up and down for songs such as “Archie”, which was hard not to.

There’s definitely a bright future ahead of this very likable band. With a strong set of times and the right attitude, they’re well on their way. I’m already looking forward to their next return to NYC.
