Earlier in the day I shared with you Andrew’s photo set of Chvrches, Hunters and The Range, who all played at McCarren Park in Brooklyn on June 15 as a part of Northside Festival. Now I share with you some of my photos, and some thoughts on the show.
Chvrches seem to be unstoppable, seemingly adding more fans and gaining momentum with every day. I was surprised that they were up for a free show at McCarren, but certainly wasn’t complaining. The only actual time I ever got to check them out live was when they played a tiny, tiny show at 285 Kent last year. Those days are long gone now, with the band blowing up in no time.
The 10-song set featured most of the tracks off their debut LP The Bones of What You Believe as well as an album bonus track titled “Strong Hand”. It seems like the trio (consisting of lead singer Lauren Mayberry as well as Iain Cook and Martin Doherty) have made the jump to stardom seem rather comfortable, becoming more confident and better players along the way. At that 285 Kent show, it seemed like the band was still coming into there own, but at McCarren Park they knew very well who they were, and aimed to please. The finisher of The stunning opener of “We Sink” (my personal favorite of theirs) and the set-finisher of “The Mother We Share” were two highlights of the synth-pop explosion that they’ve made their fame from.
The sky is the limit for these guys. If you were at the show, I certainly hope you treasured it, because it probably will be the last free show that they ever play for us here.
