After catching Earl Sweatshirt, we all shifted across the field to see what I expected to be a rather chaotic set from Tyler, The Creator. The man was in full form, joking that he didn’t even realize that Governors Ball existed until he realized he had to play it. His commentary on the festival’s smell (which apparently smelt like “Dookie”) to all of us in the photo pit (“your photos suck”) was playful, funny, and very much Tyler, The Creator.
The set itself was high energy, full of gestures and all. Earl joined Tyler on stage for the entire set, as did fellow Odd Future members Jasper Dolphin and Taco. Tyler performed crowd favorites such as “Bimmer”, “Domo23”, “Yonkers” as well as cuts such as “Bitch Suck Dick” and “Tamale” that got the young and rowdy crowd to where they wanted to be.
A highlight of the show was when Tyler went over to the VIP section and asked if their rich parents bought their tickets for them. He then flipped them off and went back to the regular section of the crowd, saying that he was going to hang out with the working class. Sure, his antics aren’t for everyone, but if your watching his set, you know damn well what you’re getting yourself into.
