A few days prior to their set at Governors Ball, Spoon announced their long-awaited new album, They Want My Soul. The album marks a change for the band as they’ve left longtime label Merge in favor of Loma Vista. They’ve also added mulch-intrumentalist Alex Fischel to the band, who played with Britt in Divine Fits.
It’s been a good four years since I last saw Spoon (they played Radio City), so it was good to see the boys back at it. With the addition of Fischel, the band seemed recharged and more than ready to reassume their position as the most consistent and reliable band working in America.
A new song called “Knock Knock Knock” started the set, a absolutely solid song that set the bar high. Thankfully when you have a set full of songs such as “Small Stakes”, “I Summon You”, “The Underdog” and “The Beast and Dragon, Adored”, there is no disappointment to be found.
Britt Daniel seemed more than ready to be back with the band after some time away with Divine Fits. The new songs sounded sharp, and all of the songs in their back catalog sounded refreshed and as good as ever. Spoon are back, and better than ever.
