Although we got to cover Broken Bells show at Webster Hall earlier in the year (Dana shot it), I personally still had yet to see the duo of James Mercer and Danger Mouse perform live. Their set at Governors Ball didn’t disappoint one bit, sounding as sharp and well versed as you’d expect from the superstar duo of sorts.
Live, it’s all business as usual for Mercer, whose always on point vocally, with Danger Mouse as his number two, manning his section with a fierce intensity. This provides a different outlet for him that his work with The Shins, to the point where its almost like watching a new man on stage.
The hooks of tracks such as the great “The Mall & Misery” (my personal favorite Broken Bells song), “Holding On for Life” and “After The Disco” was almost too much. As a 4-piece band, they are able to deliver these songs in fully fleshed out ways that I didn’t quite imagine possible. In other words, they find a new home for these songs in the live setting, and fans of the band should be very pleased.
