It’s been so long since TV On The Radio played a proper hometown show in New York City that they had to ask the crowd when the last time actually was before they started their set (the answer was at the only year of the Catalpa Music Festival back in 2012, also at Randall’s Island). It’s been a while, or “a minute” as they admitted.
They made up for it, delivering one of the strongest sets of the entire festival. They took some time to play some new songs from that eventual new album, as well as last year’s singles “Mercy” and “Million Miles.”
Lead singer Babatunde Adebimpe was as super-charged on stage as usual, delivering each track with a fierce electricity that fulfilled every word that he sung on stage. From the always groovy “Dancing Choose” to the classic sound of “Wolf Like Me”, TV On The Radio sounded recharged and as strong as ever before. By the time they finished things off with an incredible rendition of “Staring At The Sun” I realized how much I missed this band.
