L.A. rockers Papa held their own during a midday set on the Governors Ball main stage. It served to show off the material from their debut album Tender Madness, which was released last year. It’s always something to watch a drummer handle both his kit and lead vocal duties, and this was something that Darren Weiss did very well. Well rounded by the rest of the band, the results were sharp and appealing.
It was my first time catching Papa live, but I left impressed, hoping to catch a full set from them when I’m not forced to head towards the next stage. There’s untapped potential in there somewhere that surely will land Papa even bigger audiences someday. I think they’re still working towards it, but definitely keep an eye out. With songs as big as “Young Rut”, it’s only a matter of time.
