Janelle Monae was everything I expected, and then some, live during her set at Governors Ball. On stage she’s a ball full of unstoppable energy that she’s made her trademark. The only time that energy wasn’t present was when she was carted out in a straight jacket after her band filled the stage, a theatrical touch that was appropriate considering that immediately after she let loose as if she had gone mad.
She was every bit as fun and transcendent as you’d believe, pulling everyone in the audience in with a big smile, stunning vocals, and appropriate showmanship. “Dance Apocalyptic” brought the house down as expected, fulfilling its promise and responsibility as the type of song that was made for the Governors Ball main stage.
Monae is a true performer, with a bit of an old school flair to her step that works marvelously alongside her forward-thinking sounds. We’re lucky to have a pop star such as Monae, and hope that more will come forward in the future.
