Memphis punk-rockers Ex-Cult took over Brooklyn hole in the wall The Acheron late Friday night, playing a typically devastating set that absolutely rocked. The show was in support of their newly released album Midnight Passenger, out now on Goner Records.
I got there just in time for their set, and they rocked it just as hard as they did when I saw them at SXSW with Ty Segall, which is still probably one of the best shows that I’ve seen this year.
Midnight Passenger is a solid record, but I found that the live bite doesn’t totally translate in the same way on their studio recordings. It’s a hard thing to capture, but it’s a shame that the albums don’t capture the live sound because what they’re able to summon is simply stunning and unmatchable.
Frontman Chris Shaw remains as intense as always, leading the full out charge that was an assault on the senses. As expected the front of the stage was occupied by a wild pack of moshers, swinging sweat as their necks went back and forth. Bassist Natalie Hoffmann was notably absent, but her fill in did just fine. They were as tight and heavy as always, one of the best kept secrets in rock and roll.
Anytime Ex-Cult stop by New York, you know where to find me.
