Dub Thompson is the duo of 19-year-olds Matt Pulos and Evan Laffer. They recorded their debut album 9 Songs last August while living at a house in Bloomington, Indiana which just happened to be rented out by Jonathan Rado of Foxygen.
They don’t limit themselves to a genre or expectations of any sort. They admit that they grew up in a generation that lives on the internet, which allowed them to live free of being limited to any one time or place. This train of thought is reflected throughout their music, such as on their single “No Time.”
What begins playfully as a low-key electronic track soon kicks into funky elements of fragmented rock and roll that sounds part 60’s classic rock and roll and part lo-fi garage. Those titles are probably completely meaningless considering what the band is going for. You’ll just have to take a listen for yourself.
9 Songs comes out on June 10 via Dead Oceans.
