Nine years later, Sin City‘s sequel is finally here. Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is out of development hell, done with delays because of other projects, and is seeing the light of day in last August, and there’s a trailer to prove it.
Robert Rodriguez is back in the director’s chair (with some directorial help and a script from graphic novelist Frank Miller) for this pulpy noir sequel, and with him, he brings back Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jamie King, and Bruce Willis. Also added to the cast are Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Powers Boothe, Stacey Keach, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven, and Dennis Haysbert.
The plot isn’t too clear here, as there will be four interconnecting stories, two of which are adapted from Miller’s graphic novel series of the same name (“A Dame to Kill For” and “Just Another Saturday Night”). The other two (“The Long Bad Night” and “The Fat Loss”) were written by Miller for the film.
Having seen the first film last year, I was impressed by the comic-y feel, but a little turned off by the stylized nature. Maybe it hewed a little too close to the style of the source material (black-and-white, sound effects, rotoscoping and effects that didn’t age well) for my liking. Either way, the first trailer for Sin City: A Dame To Kill For stands out among the crop of recent graphic novel adaptations and sequels (maybe 300: Rise of an Empire notwithstanding), if just for the stylized look and feel.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For hits theaters on August 22.
