As a kid, I absolutely adored the Michael Jordan/Looney Tunes family film Space Jam. The combination of NBA legend Michael Jordan and the world of Looney Tunes playing basketball together was an absolute delight for children. It may not be a technically great movie, but it’s one that certainly holds a fond place in the hearts of all who grew up during the 90s. I have fond memories of abusing my VHS copy of Space Jam from watching it so constantly.
Yesterday Deadline broke the news that a sequel to Space Jam is in the works and it will star current NBA superstar Lebron James. The film will be written by Willie Ebersol and his brother, Charlie Ebersol, will produce. The film will be a vehicle for James who is trying to try his hand at films.
I don’t know how I feel about a sequel. From a basketball standpoint, I don’t think James is quite on par with Jordan on a worldwide iconic level (or even on a basketball level – but that’s a different conversation) and don’t know if this will work. Of course, we do have to remember that this is a family movie, so our expectations should be grounded regardless. I just think that Space Jam worked the way it did because it had that quirky 90s charm, and Jordan was just a larger than life star.
The Looney Tunes are long-overdue for a comeback and deserve better than their last feature, Looney Tunes: Back in Action. Lets hope for all parties involved, and for the film’s legacy, that this all works out.
