ILLLS

My friends over at the recently started New York label Aloe Music have been doing good things. One of these good things is the release of ILLLS debut album Hideout From The Feeders.

For those of you new to ILLLS, it’s the project of Oxford, Mississippi’s Steven Ross. He creates songs with sweet harmonies, laced under layers of fuzzy goodness and vocal distortion. The album features track after track of hooks that don’t immediately jump out at you, but the impression is made and with every listen you find yourself hooked more and more. There’s a lot of hooks and melodies to take in, sweeping, full of energy and hopefulness.

There’s a homey, lo-fi quality to Hideout From the Feeders that doesn’t take anything away from the album. Quite the opposite, actually. It works magically on the songs, giving them a warm realness. It’s raw and true. Some moments remind me of Youth Lagoon, who incorporates the same elements into his work.

Don’t know why this album hasn’t been getting more attention. I know everyone’s busy with their year end lists and holiday staff parties, but be sure to give this album a spin because it’s been an end of the year sleeper surprise for me.

You can stream the whole thing below, and head to Aloe Music directly to give it a purchase.
