James Blake is this year’s winner of the prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Prize for his album, Overgrown. The prize honors Blake with the award of the best British album from the past year. With the win, Blake comes home with a £20,000 cash prize ($32,000) as well as a trophy. A panel of music critics and industry insiders vote on the prize.
Blake beat out artists such as Arctic Monkeys, David Bowie, Jake Bugg, Disclosure, Foals, Savages, and Villagers. While Arctic Monkeys would have (obviously) been my first choice, I’m happy for Blake.
Here’s the full list of nominees for this year’s prize:
Arctic Monkeys, AM
David Bowie, The Next Day
James Blake, Overgrown
Jake Bugg, Jake Bugg
Disclosure, Settle
Foals, Holy Fire
Jon Hopkins, Immunity
