The first time I heard “Compliment Your Soul” I was at a party. I remember the song instantly hooking me in, just sounding so damn irresistible. I looked into the artist and was surprised to find out that it wasn’t from a big-name artist (yet). It was a new up-and-coming British artist named Dan Croll.
With only an EP and a few single released under his belt, Dan Croll has already done quite a bit to convince me that he is the real deal, a new bright spot in British music that also has potential to capture the attention of audiences here, stateside. If his showing at Mercury Lounge during CMJ was any indication, he’s already there.
The room packed in as he came on stage, and he got the crowd going from the very beginning of his set, to the very last chorus. Highlights live were of course, the previously mentioned “Compliment Your Soul”, which was stunningly larger than life live, performed skillfully by Croll and his full band. Another stunner was “From Nowhere”, the title track from the EP Croll released last year that both tracks are from.
Based of this tweet post-CMJ, things are going quite well from Dan Croll, as they should be. He’s an original and fresh addition to the music scene that it can use. He seems to be a genuine guy who just loves making music. He puts on a great live show, and acted modest. What’s not to like?
Expect big things from this fella in the future. There’s going to be no stopping him.
