Hayao Miyazaki, one of the great Japanese animated directors of our time, has announced that he plans to step away from directing.
Before the showing of Miyazaki’s latest film, The Wind Rises, at the Venice Film Festival, Studio Ghibli president Koju Hoshino made the announcement about his retirement. No other details surfaced.
It’s not the first time this has happened, so there’s always a chance he could pull a Michael Jordan, but it seems to be time. Even if this is so, there are still opportunities for Miyazaki to contribute to film in other ways if he so desires.
