Well, Slim Shady is back. Last night Eminem announced that he has a new album on the way, The Marshall Mathers LP 2. That’s right, Eminem has made a sequel to his classic The Marshall Mathers LP that graced this world 13 years ago (May 23, 2000).
With Eminem’s recent lackluster output, I had my fair share of reservations about this album, but I figured that if Eminem is releasing a sequel to such a highly praised album, the material has to be good. Right? Maybe? Um, well, lets begin, shall we?
Eminem quickly follows up the album announcement with the release of a new single called “Berzerk.” The track, produced by both Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin, features samples of Billy Squier’s “The Stroke” as well as a very heavy Beastie Boys influence. The song is going for all style, and no substance. It sounds overproduced and does absolutely nothing for me, at all.
Somewhere I held hope that the Eminem of old would possibly reemerge, but that seems to be a wild pipe dream these days.
Listen to “Berzerk” below.
