While initially receiving some backlash from comic fans, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) proved to be more than just a Hollywood money grab, and went on to be accepted as a successful reboot of the franchise. Something in me still felt loyal to Sam Raimi’s films, but the unforgettable “emo” Tobey Maguire-table-dancing scene in Spider-Man 3 left me open to new experiences. The film did not disappoint, exploring more of the Spider-Man canon whilst still staying familiar to audiences. It went on to gross almost $800 million at the box office. Columbia has already announced plans to make the 3rd and 4th installments in 2016 and 2018, respectively.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to further the saga, including some cross-over elements from the other films. Character Harry Osborne now makes an appearance, with Dane Dehaan replacing James Franco. Mary Jane Watson (played by Shailene Woodley, replacing Kirsten Dunst) was planned to make a small showing in this film, but has since been cut from it completely, most likely to limit confusion with audiences. I never thought I would see Jamie Foxx in a superhero movie, especially as a villain, but I doubt it will be disappointing.
Electro’s design does look pretty awesome, but the jury is out on whether hardcore fans will adapt. He has lost his iconic green and yellow suit, and has changed to a more “contemporary” style. (The design is somewhat based on Electro’s appearance in Ultimate.)
Maybe Spidey will make a cameo appearance in The Avengers 2, or maybe even Kingdom Hearts 3? A geek can only hope.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 tentatively releases on May 2nd, 2014 from Marvel Entertainment and Columbia Pictures.
