MGMT could have just sold out if they wanted to. They could have quickly churned out a bunch of imitations of “Kids”, attach them to a few commercial and movie trailers, and counted their riches. But with 2nd album Congratulations, MGMT decided to stay true to their musical influences, and keep pushing the boundaries, even if that meant alienating many of those counting on them to pump out a bunch of pop-ready hits.
Bravo, MGMT.
Over the weekend, as a part of Record Store Day, MGMT released a new song on cassette titled “Alien Days.” The weirdo-psych rock is in full force, with elements of The Flaming Lips floating around for sure. Personally, the ascent they took with Congratulations is the direction that the band needed to take, and I’m glad to see them taking risks and making music that is natural to them. “Alien Days” is a great song, and a hopefully a sign of what’s to come on their new album, due sometime this summer.
Take a listen to “Alien Days” below.
