Family is a mysterious band that has piqued my interest. Not only because the e-mail I received from PhoneBooth Youth was rather vague. The true reason is the strength and honest emotion that they display in their music.
They use sweet dreamy (albeit strange) vocal harmonies that naturally draw a comparison to Animal Collective (think Panda Bear – maybe Sung Tons era). The songs are sitting at their rawest form, allowing us to hear cracks of emotion in the vocals that work to the bands advantage. There’s a magical aroma surrounding these demos that I can’t quite explain. It’s quite inspiring. It may be that the bedroom recording quality of the song creates a neighborly familiarity. Or maybe it’s just that Family are an incredible young band that we should keep a close eye on.
Lets go with that.
All the demos are available to stream at the band’s bandcamp. I hand selected some of my favorites and embedded them below. Check them out, you won’t be sorry you did. The band’s recording their first proper EP. You’ll be the first I notify when I hear more.
