On October 24, Deerhunter returned to New York for a headlining performance at Webster Hall, still in support of their 2015 album Fading Frontier, released via 4AD.

Kicking things off was New Zealand singer-songwriter Aldous Harding, whose self-titled debut album flew under the radar in 2014, but was scooped up and re-released this year via Flying Nun Records. She opened the night up with a fragile set of quiet but beautiful songs, a bit of an odd fit with Deerhunter, but still totally welcome.

Deerhunter are still touring hard even a year after the release of their last album, and yet they still offered up a different set than the last time I saw them. The show was not without sound troubles, with frontman Bradford Cox having to stop songs mid-way through and restart due to technical difficulties. Things were never patched out, as an annoyed Cox took a few digs at the venue, even going so far as to say that we saw history, “the last time Deerhunter play Webster Hall.”

Even so, it was still an enjoyable set from them, including new songs and even older tracks such as “Rainwater Cassette Exchange.” If this was their final Webster Hall show (I guess Brooklyn Steel will be up next), it wasn’t a bad way for them to go out.
