Beach Fossils have been a band to watch in my mind for a while. I just didn’t get to posting it as early as I hoped to. I was firmly reminded to get off my arse and get a “band to watch” post after seeing the band live this past Saturday night. They rocked it live.

Beach Fossils is Brooklyn native Dustin Payseur. The band rocks a full lineup live that have become the solidified Beach Fossils in most of our minds. Their sound is most easily described as dreamy lo-fi with a bit of reverb on the side. They have released a few 7″ singles which include Daydream & Time. All of the songs are faced with a summer like feel with a reflection on the past hidden beneath the layers, like fossils.

“Daydream” sounds just as its advertised. It captures the essence of the glorious summer feeling, one that I am surely dreaming about having back after dealing with this harsh winter! “Vacation” is another song that is floating around from the band that is beaming with a delightful guitar riff. The songs share a carefree vibe that shares a thread of energetic tunes packing tones of catchy hooks and memorable riffs.

Some people ask me why I have such an adoration for lo-fi stuff. It’s because it comes off as more genuine to me. Sure glossy pop music like “Party In The U.S.A.” has fantastic production, but it isn’t something that I have a connection with in any way. When I listen to a band like Beach Fossils or Real Estate, something clicks. It could just be personal taste, or it could be a realization that these are just normal people, writing good tunes that speak to me. They don’t need to add too much from the studio to make it work. They let music in the rawest form do the speaking for them.

Brooklyn record label Captured Tracks released their Daydream/Desert Sand single for Daydream. You can buy that here. They are also releasing Beach Fossil’s debut album in April. Oh boy, I can’t wait for that. They are playing in NYC @ The Living Room on March 7th, and have a ridiculously busy SXSW lined up. (8 shows in 4 days!)
