Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene have kept plenty busy this year with the release of two EP’s: Lets Try the After – Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, both which were released via Arts & Crafts. The band have been touring in support of the EPs all year, including a few nights at Webster Hall back in May.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Canadian rock group returned to Brooklyn on July 25th, for a free performance at the Prospect Park Bandshell as a part of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival.

Opening things up was British singer-songwrtier Nilüfer Yanya, who is touring in support of her lovely debut album Miss Universe, which was released back in March via ATO Records. The performance came a day before she headed up to perform at the Newport Folk Festival.

Broken Social Scene always deliver a good performance and this night was no different. Although current members Charles Spearin and Ariel Engle was unable to make the show, they were able to get longtime collaborator and Stars’ Amy Millan to fill in for her and also lead the band through a cover of Stars’ “Ageless Beauty.”

Whereas some bands would cheapen out on the length of the show with it being free, the band’s Kevin Drew made it clear that this wouldn’t be the case telling fans that “we’re going to keep going until they tell us to go,” and powering through a 17-song setlist that definitely came clsoe to the parks late-night curfew. The band ran through a razor-tight setlist with the beautiful park as the backdrop, bringing their songs to life in the beautiful and life-affirming fashion that we have all come to expect.
