It’s been a long time since we got a new album from Chromatics, with 2012’s Kill for Love having come out seven years ago. We’ve been waiting for them to release Dear Tommy which has been sitting in release-limbo ever since it was announced in 2014. It seems like it’s release is imminent as the band has shared a few new singles from the album and to our surprise announced a tour this year that brought them to New York for a two-night run at Brooklyn Steel.
This was a big deal as we hadn’t seen the band since their show at Terminal 5 in 2013. The show also featured an opening performance from Desire (also featuring Chromatics’ Johnny Jewel), which was a picture-perfect choice to open the show and get the electronic vibes flowing freely throughout Brooklyn Steel.
The band shared some of the newly released songs that we may hope to see on Dear Tommy, as well as the staple of favorites from past albums such as “Night Drive,” “Lady,” “Shadow,” and “These Streets Will Never Look the Same.” Not to mention their covers of Neil Young’s Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) and Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” that truly does feel like a completely different interpretation even more so in the live format.
Johnny Jewel told the crowd that it was their first ever two-night run in a city, something that we can expect them to get used to for their next tour. We hope that the next time we see them perform it’s in support of the official release of Dear Tommy.
