The Murlocs, the project led by Ambrose Kenny Smith of King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard, who (along with King Gizzard bassist Cook Craig) somehow finds time to release music with his band in-between King Gizzard’s prolific output. The band just released their fourth album Manic Candid Episode via ATO Records and have embarked on their first headlining tour in North America. This brought them to New York on April 27th for a headlining performance at Bowery Ballroom with openers Moonwalks.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that this would be a lively crowd, as the young audience began moshing during the very first moments of Moonwalks set. It was no surprise that this spread throughout the front section of the crowd once The Murlocs took the stage and ran through their setlist, which included a ton of new material from Manic Candid Episode as well as a wide selection of older cuts as well.

The band closed the show with a cover of Hot Chocolate’s “Every 1’s a Winner,” that featured King Gizzard’s Stu Mackenzie on guitar and drummer Eric Moore embarking on a crowdsurf, ending their wild set on a gloriously high note.
