Dark Tape is the project of 19-year-old San Fransico resident Rohit Dutta. He previously played in Orange County band Sundive before going to school in the Bay

“Passing By” is like a combination of the best of early Captured Tracks blog era stuff, such as Wild Nothing, Craft Spells and DIIV. Rich with 80s inspiration with a lo-fi quality to it that is equally warm and charming.

Here’s Dutta giving some insight into the meaning behind the track:

I wrote and recorded ‘Passing By’ during the first couple of weeks of college. I was heading out to a school where I did not know a single person since no one from my hometown was going there. There were just so many new people around me, it was my first time living by myself, and it all was kind of overwhelming. I always hung out with the same small group of friends back home and I think those feelings of missing them and accepting the fact that life goes on and that we are all moving on to bigger and better things also played into the overall feeling of the song. Essentially, this song is just a reflection of those feelings of uncertainty and that process of acceptance that I had went through in those first few weeks and am still going through today.

Dark Tape’s debut EP will be released in early 2019. You can find “Passing By” streaming below and find it – and other songs – available to grab for whatever price you want over at his Bandcamp.
