Last year saw The Lemon Twigs, the duo of brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario return with their sophomore album Go to School, released via 4AD. The band spent a good chunk of the year touring in support of it and that toured extended into the new year, with two headlining performances of their at Music Hall of Williamsburg, the sort of venue where they playing as the opening act only two years ago.

They kicked off night one of their two-night run at Music Hall of Williamsburg last night (January 18) and it featuring an opening performance from both Jackie Cohen and Rubber Band Gun, with some members of the latter also playing with the former. Jackie Cohen is married to Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado who performed with her band as well as serving as the producer of both her Tacoma Night Terror EP’s.

These days The Lemon Twigs are sporting a completely new lineup. Danny Ayala and Megan Zeankowski are no longer a part of the band, replaced by bassist Daryl Johns, keyboardist Tommaso Taddonio, and drummer Andres Valbuena. Having a drummer allows both Brian and Michael the ability to stay up front with their guitars as the defacto frontmen for the entirety of the show and it paid dividends.

Michael D’Addario shined in the role of frontman, actually rocking out so hard he ripped his pants only four songs into their set and reemerged back on stage in just his underwear and heeled shoes that he still found a way to rock out in.

Seeing how accomplished players that he and his brother Brian are already at such a young age is truly remarkable and it’s exciting to consider they’re really only getting started. A majority of their setlist came from their new album which sounded even better in person thanks to their ability to raise the bar in the live setting.
