Like many, I discovered Irish band Kodaline after discovering the music video for “All I Want” and kept them on my radar. In January 2013 I caught their first ever NYC performance at Mercury Lounge (before they had even released their debut album In a Perfect World) which was packed out with prideful Irish natives who helped welcome the band to the big city.

Since then, the band have taken off, playing big rooms across the globe and releasing two more albums along the way. Their latest record Politics of Living came out this year and features a more pop-oriented sound for the band. It definitely wasn’t quite the direction I expected the band to go in but after five years it’s understanable that they would want to try something new.

One December 4 they made their return to New York for a sold out performane at Irving Plaza. This was my first time seeing them since the show at Mercury Lounge and it was an amazing contrast in many ways. But it was worth it for the eventual performance of songs from In a Perfect World again, especially both “All I Want” and “High Hopes,” which had the crowd belting out every single lyric as if a switch had be hit.
